Urban Traffic Plan
The urban traffic plan, acronym P.U.T., was made mandatory by the decree Legislative no. 285/1992 (as amended) for municipalities with more than 30000 inhabitants.
At ministerial level, the directives concerning this plan were issued in Official Gazette No 146 of 1995.
The P.U.T. coordinates actions to improve the circulation of the urban area in common, considering pedestrians, public and private means of transport.
In order to plan the interventions it was necessary to introduce the functional classification of roads, On the basis of their functional characteristics, there are:
The sliding roads Fast roads are an intermediate route between two categories of roads, namely motorways and roads.
The inter-district roads are an intermediate level between those of scroll and those of neighborhood.
Finally, the local cross-zonal roads represent the middle ground between those of the neighborhood and the local ones.
At this stage it is good to remember that the current legislation, concerning the design and planning of traffic, tends to promote the creation of roundabouts rather than traffic lights crossings.
